Engineering Department – Transportation Updates
Moulton Street Resurfacing:
The new traffic control cameras were installed at the beginning of the project and have been operating properly. These cameras were installed at various intersections on the west side of the project. Paving work west of the CSX Railroad has been completed as well as the accessible ramps on that side of the project. The paving work east of the railroad has also been completed. The east side paving work was completed very quickly during approximately two weeks of night work. Currently all of the temporary striping has been installed with the permanent striping to follow at a later date. Accessible ramp construction will begin on the east side of the project sometime around the end of June or beginning of July. Permanent stripes, markings, and reflectors will be installed near the end of the project. The estimated substantial completion date is near the last week of July. After which an inspection will occur followed by work on punch list items.
Spring Avenue Utilities Relocations:
Utility relocations for the future Spring Avenue Widening has continued to progress well and the project is approximately 80% complete. Work by the contractor for this project will be completed near the end of July or early August. The contractor has done all the patches to road crossings for the work that is within his contract. Other “potholes” or uneven surfaces on Spring Avenue are from the continuing degradation of the roadway, not from the current contractor’s work. This project will not resurface the roadway, that will not happen until the Widening project is let by ALDOT and that work begins. The Widening Project is expected to bid in the late fall of 2017 and will likely take 18 months of construction time.
Indian Hills Road Intersection Realignment:
The pre-construction meeting was held for this project recently, and the notice to proceed was issued to the contractor on June 22. Work will begin in July at Indian Hills Road SE on the north side of Hwy 67. The anticipated start date is July 10. Indian Hills Road will be closed to all thru traffic at this intersection. Residents of Indian Hills Road between Upper River Road and Hwy 67 will need to use Upper River Road for access. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
West Moulton Street Widening:
This project has undergone an extensive design process. However, the final design for the project has been submitted for approval by ALDOT and is expected to bid in August or September. Work would begin in approximately 45 to 60 days after the bid letting. The time for construction completion would be late summer to early fall of 2018.
